about

Band History

Root Philosophy is a four-piece band from South Orange, New Jersey. Starting on Labor Day 1998, Bryan and Patrick got together with Ed after already playing and writing for some time; even playing with another guitarist at one point. Meeting him through a mutual friend, Ed later agreed to join the duo for what would be the beginnings of Root Philosophy. After playing for about a couple of months without a singer the band later recruited Joel who’d been a close friend of Ed’s.

After going through a few name changes the band settled on the name Root Philosophy, which has its origins in the titles of works by Alex Haley and P.F. Strawson. After forming the final quartet in mid November ’98 the band played their first show at the Cove in Roselle, New Jersey on April 8th.
